Headteachers Message

A message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/Carer,

As we approach the end of the spring term I would like to share some of the highlights of this term and also inform you of the arrangements for the end of term.

January saw year 11 experiencing an intense two weeks of mock examinations. Most Year 11 experienced at least two exams per day as this year group will have to sit more exams in the summer than any previous year 11 students. The students were a credit to parents, the school and themselves in the way they took the process extremely seriously, using it to plan for the summer. If that wasn’t enough, March saw them sitting full further mocks in English and mathematics.

February saw our annual school production which this year was Annie. Despite significant barriers, including unprecedented staff and student illness, the show was a spectacular success, a shining example of The High Arcal School’s inclusivity, team work and resilience. Having attended both evenings I can honestly say that this production was so uplifting, reminding us all of the important role extra-curricular activity plays in student engagement.

March witnessed another fantastic event, The 2017 High Arcal Dance Festival. Yet again we were able to hold the event at Dudley Evolve Theatre, a fantastic venue whose staff could not have been more accommodating. The breadth of talent on stage was extraordinary, thanks to our dedicated team of dance teachers, directed by Mrs. Mullen Furness. The staff dance was ’something else,’ and also great fun, demonstrating the staff’s commitment, if not talent!

Earlier in the term I wrote to you informing you of our plans to join a multi academy trust, namely Dudley Academies Trust. Plans for this are well underway and an opportunity to share more information regarding this will take place during the summer term. All four other educational establishments involved (Hillcrest, Castle, Holly Hall and Dudley College) are already working together to improve the educational outcomes for students in Dudley.

To support these plans we are intending closing all of our schools on the last day of the spring term (April 7th) at 12 p.m. to allow intense planning across subject areas. This means that students at The High Arcal School will leave at 12 p.m. on Friday 7th April. Students entitled to Free School Meals will be provided with a sandwich lunch if they wish at 12 p.m.

Some year 11 students who will be taking their Art exams during the last week of term will have a slight change to their exam times. Year 11 students who normally have Miss. Jefferies on a Wednesday and Thursday and Mrs. Kite on a Wednesday and Friday will sit their Art exam as below:

 Thursday 6th April 2017

Exam to start at 8.40, break and lunch as normal, exam to finish at 4 p.m.

 Friday 7th April 2017

Exam to start at 8.40, break as normal, finish exam at 12.15 p.m.

I would be grateful if you would complete the slip below and return it to your child’s form tutor, acknowledging receipt of this letter.

Finally can I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very happy Easter and wish year 11 students in particular good luck with your revision.

Yours sincerely,

Headteacher
