Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development

SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) education is about developing the whole child. At the High Arcal School it is delivered in a number of ways; through the school ethos and charter, PSHEE programme, extra-curricular activity and within the school curriculum.

At the High Arcal School we firmly believe in a broad and rich curriculum that ‘expands students’ intellectual and cultural horizons.’ We recognise that students’ cultural and intellectual development plays an integral part in enhancing their ability to learn and achieve, but also helps to create independent, resilient and articulate young people who are ready to face the challenges of life.

We therefore aim to provide an education that provides our students with vast opportunities and experiences to explore and develop their own values, whilst recognising that those of others may differ. Beliefs, behaviours, spiritual awareness and high standards foster a positive and caring environment. In addition, an understanding of the UK’s social and cultural traditions, diversity and culture are all critical dispositions that are shared, developed and encouraged through both the formal and wider curriculum.

Students and staff at The High Arcal School understand their rights and accept their responsibilities and the need to respect others. The school charter and expectations for student behaviour promote respect, tolerance and understanding of others and also models the importance of the rule of the law.
