The Work Related Learning Programme
At the Governors strategy meeting, it was agreed that the school would explore further Business Partnership links with local businesses and industries so that students could develop the skills needed to move into the world of work. The Work Related Learning (WRL) programme, is a bit like an apprenticeship. It gives students the opportunity to specialise in key areas of interest with the view of them potentially getting a long-term job offer or provide them with the invaluable experience that they will need to move into further education, training or employment.
Students spend anything from half a day to two days working with businesses and other organisations, whilst still attending school on the other days to ensure they secure GCSEs in Maths, English, Science as well as one or two other optional subjects. The programme has been running for one year and has expanded quickly and proved to be very popular with the students that have taken part.
All employers and business are thoroughly checked by Dudley Educational Business Partnerships and regular visits are made by the Alternative Curriculum Co-ordinator to ensure that the training programme is effective, students are engaging well and employers are happy with the progress students are making.
Currently the school has developed business links and a Work Related Programme with the following organisations.
* Holden’s Bottling Company
* The Village Gym (at the Village Hotel)
* Cloud 9 Nursery
* Bramford Primary
* Netherton car mechanics
Over the next academic year we are looking to expand the number of students taking place in the Work Related Learning programme, as well as develop the number of business and organisations that we are working with.
